Candide

(1956) 1999
Music by Leonard Bernstein
Lyrics by Richard Wilbur
Additional Lyrics by John Latouche and Dorothy Parker
Book by Lillian Hellman

Candide, based on French Enlightenment writer Voltaire's novella of the same name, chronicles the journey, both literal and emotional, of Candide and Cunegonde.  By way of constant tragedy and disaster, these two star-crossed lovers gradually transition from naive, optimistic teenagers into mature, practical adults, grounded in realism, all the while maintaining hope for a better life and their love for one another.  Meant as a satirical rejection of the then popular philosophy of optimism, Voltaire employs a colorful cast of characters, comedy and sharp wit to ridicule the idea that our world is "the best of all possible worlds".  Leonard Bernstein's masterpiece of a score takes Voltaire's story to new heights, with numbers that range from heartbreaking to hysterical to simply sublime.

Directed by Steven Daigle and conducted by Steven Byess, Ohio Light's production of Candide promises to be a fantastic celebration of the 100th anniversary of Bernstein's birth.
